Night photography in Leiden
June 1st, 2009
I’ve had another opportunity to explore some of Leiden’s nicest places in the dark. There were a few places I’ve been waiting to visit at night: Leiden Centraal (train station), Gorlaeus, and Leiden Lammeschans (a smaller train station). I visited all of them last night. The best pictures I took were at the second site, Gorlaeus laboratory. I spent about 60 minutes at the first site, another 40 at the second, and less than 20 at the third. At Leiden Lammeschans inspiration left me and I wound up taking what felt like obligatory (and uninspired) shots. No pictures from that site are included in this post.
Here’s an old medical building at the dark end of Leiden Centraal, taken in one shot and turned to black and white:
After Centraal Station I visited the Gorlaeus laboratories close by. As expected, the site was completely deserted. The building below is actually very ugly when seen in sunlight, but I had a hunch it would look much better in the dark. And I think I was right:
Right next to this building is the circular canteen where I spent four weeks somewhere in 1994, realizing I did not wanted to study astronomy. The canteen did not fail to deliver last night, either:
Below are two more results of my night session.

My name is Marco Hokke. My blog is about the things that interest me and things I might forget if I would not blog them.
