Auschwitz Crematorium
January 8th, 2009
This chimney is the last remaining chimney in the Auschwitz camps. It is part of Auschwitz I, the main camp. There is a gas-chamber in the same building (in this picture, just left of the chimney, but you can’t see it as something separate) where tens of thousands of people have died.
It is here that the Nazi’s experimented with ways to kill and dispose of people in a more efficient way. Zyklon B was tested here, and the workings of the ovens to burn bodies was used as a basis for developing the ovens built and used in Birkenau. Whenever people were put to death in the gas-chamber an SS officer would start an engine nearby, so that the screams of those dying could not be heard inside the camp.
The tour of the Auschwitz camp includes a walk through the gas-chamber and through the crematorium, where you can see the apparatus used to transport and shove dead bodies into the ovens. 4 Days after seeing it, it is more and more unbelievable that such a place can exist.
