8100030d: Unable to connect

June 20th, 2009

For the last couple of days my MSN Messenger has given me an error whenever I try to log on using one of my hotmail addresses. The error is confined to a single hotmail address; I can log on using a different one. I haven’t changed anything obvious over the last few days, so to me it’s a mystery why this error now prevents me from signing on to MSN using that specific hotmail address.

Microsoft itself says to delete a Windows Live Contacts folder hidden away in my local folder. But that did not work. I also checked the firewall settings (though I had no hope of finding anything wrong with it), uninstalled Messenger Plus!, and even reinstalled MSN Messenger. To no avail whatsoever. I still can’t log on to the MSN network using that specific hotmail address.

So, I decided to use Trillian. The basic version (which is free) comes with support for a number of chat protocols including MSN. You can have multiple connections at the same time (something that Messenger does not support). I was a little worried that there might be something wrong with the account altogether (though email works just fine), but after installing, Trillian just copied my accounts from MSN Messenger and opened them for me. Log in was automatic and without problems!

I don’t actually have an explanation for the problem, nor a solution, but using Trillian is an easy workaround.
