1 month!

Today I celebrate my first month as a vegetarian!
May 4th (such a wonderfully arbitrary date to make a change in my life) was the first day of my vegetarian life, after I was inspired to make a change by a small documentary called “Meet your meat”. I already knew what goes on in the bio-industry but after seeing this documentary together with a small ad saying “Commit to 30 days of vegetarian life” I decided to give it a try.
In came the vegetarian recipes. Beans, curries, pastas, risottos, rice, potatoes and salads. Not all of them were good, but some of them were. If you like cooking, you will appreciate the opportunity to discover a new way of assembling and preparing your meals without meat. No meat-replacements are necessary (but sometimes they can be a tasty addition), you can get everything you need by choosing the right ingredients.
Initially, I thought I’d still eat meat if it came from a local farm where it had a good and normal life full of splashing around in mud and looking at sunsets. But to be honest, the craving for meat is gone sooner that I’d thought, and adapting to a vegetarian lifestyle was reasonably easy. With a little help from John and Anik and the eatgreen.nl website with their starter-kit and wonderful recipes, I feel very comfortable and happy being a vegetarian.
To completely eliminate contributing to bio-industry, I should also stop eating cookies and stop drinking milk, and generally avoid animal-based products alltogether. That is not a step I am willing to take right now, but I might get there in the future.
Here’s to good food and a healthy body, and a vegetarian lifestyle!
