Changing database password for a Wordpress blog

December 2nd, 2008

I wanted to make an online todo-list application using the MySql database on my domain, where my Wordpress blog also resides. For irrelevant reasons I decided to change the database password so that I could access it through a Windows application–but in doing so I buggered up my Wordpress blog because it still used the old password.

After searching for a bit I found out that you only need to change a line in the wp-config.php file, where the database credentials are listed. Update the password, and you’re done!

Or so you should. Instead, I found that my text editor (Windows’s Notepad–what a classic) buggered up the wp-config.php file by removing all the line-breaks. With my limited knowledge of php I put line-breaks where they seemed to fit, and uploaded the file. Checked my website, and… nothing came up! Blank screen, no content at all.

I found this article on semiologic that shows how the wp-config.php file should look, and I discovered I hadn’t put in all the necessary line-breaks, so that some separate commands were on the same line. After fixing this in Notepad++ and uploading again, my blog appeared gloriously once more. Obviously, because otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this post.
